A layover in Orlando is aptly summed up as fun! You can relive your childhood or imagine yourself in your favorite movie. But that’s not it! Theme Parks are just one aspect. Orlando is a potpourri of nature, adventure, and nightlife!

Immersive Orlando: Wizarding World, Marvel Island, LEGOLAND!

A layover in Orlando is never completed without visiting a theme park or two. In fact, the first few layovers are all about them, and mine were no exception. I loved reliving my favorite shows, movies, and books, so here are some of my most beloved experiences:

• Universal Orlando Resort

  Being a Harry Potter buff, the first theme Park I visited with the crew was the Universal Orlando Resort. I was totally swept away by an exhilarating world of imagination. The magic of the books instantly came to life.

I embarked on the incredible journey through The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, with all the works, including Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, Diagon Alley, and whatnot; I was spellbound. We even rode Hagrid’s Motorbike roller coaster that took us through the spine-chilling Forbidden Forest.

But the resort is not just for HP fans. I still have to check out the mischievous Minions in Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and the superheroes in Marvel Super Hero Island! Also, The Studio Backlot Tour is another explore on my bucket list, which gives a glimpse of how these fascinating worlds come into existence in the first place.

• LEGOLAND Florida Resort

While witnessing these magical worlds in reality is a memorable experience on a layover in Orlando, losing myself in a world made from life-sized, colorful, LEGO blocks is otherworldly. And having a crew that shares your passion for LEGOs is a blessing only a few have.

Although it’s a place to relive your childhood, it offers so much for adults too. I was wonderstruck seeing the intricately crafted LEGO replicas of famous landmarks at The Miniland USA.

Also, the adrenaline-pumping roller coasters such as the Dragon and Coastersaurus were thoroughly thrilling! And at times if you feel like going slow on the adrenaline, you can even take a gentle boat ride through the LEGO City area.

However, the most exciting part of the whole visit was the LEGO 4D Movie Theater. It provided a captivating sensory experience, with special effects that made me feel like I was part of the action.

LEGOLAND Florida Resort is a place where imagination has no limits. The joy of building and playing with LEGO bricks brought back so many childhood memories for all of us!

Adventurous Orlando: Airboats, Indoor Skydiving, Military Tanks!

Orlando, a thrilling paradise for adventurers, offers natural escapes, military tank experiences, and zero-gravity skydiving. I have had my fair share of adventures here, some of my most memorable experiences include:

• Boggy Creek Airboat Adventure

  Nestled amidst the untamed beauty of the Florida Everglades, Boggy Creek is an exhilarating journey, promising an extraordinary encounter with nature’s splendor.
  Our crew is full of thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts so, it was never a question that we wouldn’t embark upon this unforgettable Airboat adventure if given a chance.

  And it turned out to be just the adrenaline-fueled exploration we had hoped for. We stepped into the sleek airboats without a clue what we were getting into. However, as the powerful airboat engines roared to life, and the wind whipped through our hair, we began gliding across the shimmering waterways.

  My heart started racing with excitement. The airboat’s nimble movements through the heart of the Everglades, rampant with narrow channels and lush mangroves was thoroughly fascinating.

  And the best part was that we got to witness nature’s majestic creatures up close and personal. We caught glimpses of a graceful heron taking flight and a massive, mighty alligator sunning itself on a riverbank just a few feet away.

  However, what enchanted me the most was that if you don’t disturb the habitat, these creatures will mind their own business. The whole ecosystem is a deep manifestation of this delicate balance we seldom see in human-inhabited areas.

  Every time we have a layover in Orlando, given a chance, I’d love to explore this captivating ecosystem over and over again. This is not something I can find anywhere else on the planet.

• iFly Orlando Indoor Skydiving

While you can skydive in so many places across the world, Orlando’s indoor skydiving is a thoroughly unique and exhilarating experience.

Although we love adventure, iFly was totally new to us when we had our first layover in Orlando. I was a bit nervous, but excited at the same time. However, the pre-flight training and the skilled instructor led the crew through the basics, boosting our confidence.

Gearing up in the sleek flight suit, helmet, goggles, and earplugs reminded me of day 1 of my pilot training. I was ready to conquer the winds.

I vividly remember the moment we entered the flight chamber, the wind tunnel powered up, and I felt being lifted off the ground, defying gravity.

While I have flown in an airplane so many times, the sensation of freefalling in a controlled environment was absolutely mind-blowing. The wind rushing past me, the weightlessness—it was an experience unlike any other. I couldn’t help but smile and let out a few whoops of delight.

Overall, I feel, If you’re seeking an adrenaline-pumping adventure that’s safe, exhilarating, and accessible to all, iFly Orlando is just that. You will leave with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

• Tank America

  As you have figured by now, I seek a new adventure on each layover in Orlando. On one such layover, I got to know about Tank America.

The moment I entered, I saw those massive camo tanks lined up and ready for action! Once we geared up and learned all the necessary controls, it was time to crush those obstacles!

These tanks make you feel like being in a G.I. Joe movie! The raw power and sheer size of the vehicle are awe-inspiring.

As the engine roared to life, I felt the vibration beneath me, and the adventure began. The challenge lies in the terrain itself, with so many twists and turns, that truly test your grit.

You need to tackle steep inclines, cross rugged terrains, and ultimately face off in an exhilarating paintball battle with other tanks. The thrill of commanding such a formidable machine is absolutely surreal.

It is a super crew activity because the camaraderie formed here stays with you for a lifetime.

Fun & Vibrant Orlando: Burgers, Arcades, & Escape Rooms!

While adventure is one other thing you can do in Orlando if you are done with the theme parks, exploring its food festivals, food factories, and Escape rooms can’t be missed too. When you are done with the day adventures, a layover in Orlando completed changes gears at night. My favorite nightlife experiences include:

• The Escape Game Orlando

  Orlando is so big on escape rooms, that the layover ends, but mysteries don’t. We have a crew full of Sherlocks, ready to test their sleuthing skills at a moment’s notice. So, on each layover in Orlando, we look forward to solving a new escape room mystery.

My favorite experience was at the Escape Game. They offer such a diverse set of escape rooms that your mind will be totally blown if you pick just anyone. Being a Money Heist fan, I loved the Heist room, where we had to recover the famous Monet painting.

The immersive setup is so life-like that you literally feel like being in French Museum. And the meticulously designed storyline made us forget who we really were. The hidden clues, puzzles, and locks, all posed some terrific challenges to our wits.

With the clock ticking, we had to think outside the box and work together as a team. With each puzzle we solved, the sense of accomplishment and excitement grew. And finally, we found and restored the painting to escape the room, moments before we ran out of time!

The sense of accomplishment within the crew was palpable.

• Grab a burger at the World’s Largest McDonalds’

Even though there is no shortage of fine-dining places in Orlando, there is something in the city’s air here that makes you crave comfort food like a child. And what better place to grab that juicy Big Mac than at the biggest McDonald’s in the world?

But when we headed there, we were taken by surprise. It is not just a regular McDonald’s. Everything from the menu to the experience is unique. You get cheesecakes, pizzas, and pasta, play arcade games, and click lots of selfies with the Moon Mac Mascot on the piano!

Living up to being the largest McDonald’s the portion sizes here are also much more generous.

The whole vibe here is so nostalgic that it is a perfect place to hang out with the crew, eat loads of burgers, and have arcade competitions!

And when done eating, you can even head to the rooftop terrace offering a stunning view of the surrounding area.

Cheerio, Orlando: You Make Me Nostalgic!

A layover in Orlando is an amalgamation of adventures. It’s a city where theme parks, adventure, and fun never end. I am planning on taking the famous Flamingo Walk at Discovery Cove to see those iconic pink creatures standing on one leg. Until then, I will cherish the delightful memories we created here.

My fascination with Istanbul began when I first stumbled upon this beautiful Netflix show “Midnight at the Pera Palace.” I was completely awestruck by the city being the center of attraction for every regime as far as history goes back. Therefore, a layover in Istanbul was a dream-come-true opportunity to experience live all I had read and seen.

Istanbul: A Historic Time Capsule

The first layover in Istanbul is always historic. You can’t help but notice why people say this city has seen it all! Owing to its strategic location at the Bosporus Strait, all famous empires – from Greeks to Romans to Ottomans, have considered this as their crown jewel. Leaving behind an unparalleled amalgamation of cultures glaringly visible in its historic buildings, palaces, and fortresses. My favorite historic spots include:

• Hagia Sophia

  A true symbol of cultural amalgamation, Hagia Sophia is as interesting as it gets. No wonder it’s on everyone’s bucket list when they visit Istanbul for the first time. Originally built as a cathedral and later converted to a mosque under the Ottomans, the building tells Istanbul’s story like no other.

  Its splendid Byzantine mosaics and marble pillars blend unimaginably well with the beautiful limestone and sandstone minarets added by the Ottomans.

  However, for me, the most striking part of this breathtaking architectural marvel was its massive, transcendent dome. Sunlight falling through the dome, makes you feel the divine presence in all its glory. This feeling draws me back here, almost every time I have a layover in Istanbul.

• Topkapi Palace

Another favorite destination of mine in awe-inspiring Istanbul is the stunning Topkapı Palace. Its ornate gates, intricate tilework, and mosaics-adorned walls and floors all leave you completely awestruck. Its stunning murals offer the perfect selfie backdrop for a social media buff like me.

The crew and I love exploring the opulence and grandeur of the Ottoman Empire through the palace’s countless buildings. It has that “stepping back in time” feel to it. You can imagine the sultans and their courtiers strolling through the palace’s gardens, relaxing in shaded pavilions, and enjoying sumptuous feasts in the palace’s many dining halls.

My favorite spots include İftar Pavilion offering stunning views of the Bosphorus Strait, and the Courtyard of the Favorites, featuring a central fountain surrounded by ornate marble columns and lush greenery – truly rejuvenating in every sense!

• Walls of Constantinople

Owing to my growing fascination, I made it a point to watch every show I could find on the city. So naturally, I devoured the Rise of the Empires: Ottoman. And that’s how I got to know about the unbreachable Walls of Constantinople.

So, the next time I had a layover in Istanbul, I made it a point to pay the walls a visit. I found out that since the 5th century, these walls have protected the city from invasions and sieges for over a thousand years. As the legend goes, it took the mighty Ottoman Sultan Mehmed 53 days and a massive “Basilica” canon to breach these walls!

Even after tremendous assault, these walls still stand tall today, as a symbol of Istanbul’s resilience. Furthermore, they offer some of the most spectacular views in Istanbul, particularly breathtaking at sunset & sunrise.

Entertaining Istanbul: Sufism, Belly Dancing, Hookah, & Waterfront Bars

A layover in Istanbul is as entertaining as it’s historic. With such versatility of entertainment available in this city, each layover offers a new experience. Some of my favorite moments include the following:

• Mesmerizing Sema at the Galata Mevlevi Lodge

  Galata Mevlevi Lodge is one of the most enchanting places I have ever visited, not just in Istanbul but in the entire world! While the city offers ample nightlife and modern entertainment, witnessing Sema – a Sufi dance, is truly unique and divine.

  This unforgettable experience transports you to another time and place. The lodge’s peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, dim lighting, and hushed reverence add to its overall mystique.

  The performance includes whirling dervishes, dressed in their traditional white robes and tall, conical hats. As they swirl to the melodious Turkish tunes, with spellbinding grace and fluidity, they surrender themselves to divinity.

  With their arms raised and palms up, the dervishes seek divine grace. The musical chanting creates a hypnotic rhythm that builds in intensity as the dance goes on. This meditative and trance-like experience leaves you awe-struck once the performance culminates.

• Ortakoy – Istanbul’s Nightlife Hub

Apart from historic and cultural blends, Istanbul also offers a fantastic blend of modern and traditional entertainment. While Sema is a divine experience, whenever the crew and I crave a young and vibrant nightlife destination, we head to Otakoy.

This vibrant and charming neighborhood on the European side of the city, offers countless picturesque waterfront bars and restaurants, with stunning Bosphorus Bridge views and live music.

The neighborhood is rampant with multi-level nightclubs such as Anjelique, where you get to enjoy the chic atmosphere.

Its rooftop terrace and multiple dance floors ensure you don’t have a dull moment. And when we crave sampling some delish cocktails and Mediterranean-inspired dishes, Kiki Ortakoy is my go-to place.

• Sultana’s Dinner and 1001 Night Show

  Sultana’s Dinner and 1001 Night Show is yet another unforgettable experience the crew and I had on a layover in Istanbul. The show offers a truly unique blend of Turkish entertainment and cuisine.

  The evening begins with a traditional Turkish feast, featuring a wide spread of delicious dishes, including my favorite lamb kebab and meze. Even vegetarian and Halal options are available, so the dinner is as inclusive as it gets. The venue’s cozy and intimate atmosphere is indescribably relaxing.

Post dinner, the night transforms into a fun and entertainment event with traditional Turkish performances, belly dancing, folk dances, and live music. You even get your choice of Hookah to enjoy the show like a true Ottoman royal!

Unique Istanbul Experiences: Body Massage, Backgammon & Bazaar

While history and entertainment are just some facets of the Turkish Adventure, some unique experiences are never to be missed. My favorites include the following:

• Relaxing at Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı

  After a tiring flight schedule, a layover in Istanbul is a blessing, the crew and I can’t appreciate enough. When we are not brimming with touristy curiosity, we love taking it slow. So, what better way than a hot and balmy bath followed by a soothing traditional massage?

  Therefore, on several Istanbul layovers, we have visited the Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı for the best rejuvenation possible. The moment you enter this place, you leave all your woes and tired body behind.

  You are greeted with refreshing homemade sherbet and then taken to the bathing area, situated under a beautiful dome. Here you are soaked in perfumed foams, that help you relax.

  Following this, you are given the massage of your choice. Giving a huge relief to your aching body, the establishment ensures, that you are a new person altogether when you exit the gates.

  You can even choose from the diverse menu of snacks while you have this blissful experience.

• Playing Backgammon at a Local Tea Shop

  Like Chess is to Russia, Backgammon is to Turkey. Istanbul’s streets are lined with tea shops and tables with Turkish gentlemen sitting across each other, wrapped in intense Backgammon duels.

  The whole vibe is so competitive with a cheering crowd siding with their unofficially chosen player. However, the competition heat subsides, and the players walk hand in hand for a hot cup of Suleimani. Mostly the winner treats the loser.

  Nothing can match witnessing an invigorating round of this 5,000-year-old Persian game, other than playing it yourself. The Turkish players have a custom of offering their board to you if you stand during a game and show interest. You can accept the challenge and beat them at their own game by being your strategic best, and hoping that the die favors you.

  So, before your next layover in Istanbul, do brush up on the rules, to seize such an opportunity. Who knows you might end up becoming the next local champion! I, for one, was totally ‘Marsed’ by the seasoned player who challenged me once.

• Getting Lost in Grand Bazaar’s Grandeur

  Ideally named, the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul is impossible to miss. At a walking distance from most historic sites, the market is spread across 60 streets and houses close to 5,000 shops. From silk carpets to exotic spices, you can’t imagine the diversity till you step foot here.

Decorated with an array of beautiful and colorful stained-glass lanterns, the Bazaar oozes with the perseverant Turkish salesman spirit. You can bargain as much as you want but at the end of it all, you will have purchased some iconic life-cherishing items.

On almost every layover in Istanbul, I go souvenir shopping here. After my really embarrassing defeat at Backgammon, I even bought a board to practice at home. And the best part is that the market knows that once inside, you wouldn’t want to leave. So, it weaves a maze around you, making getting out a stimulating escape-room experience.

Thus, when you get out, you take with you a bittersweet memory blending the achievement of solving the maze with the sadness of leaving this beautiful city behind.

Güle Güle, Istanbul: You Have Charmed Me!

A layover in Istanbul is always short, no matter how many days you get to spend here. The city has so much to offer that I love coming back here and exploring its new parts and facets. Miniatürk or Miniature Turkey and the tulips of the Gülhane Park still remain unexplored. So, the next time I am there, my bucket list will be brimming with new adventures!

A layover in Cairns is exciting, adventurous, relaxing, and delicious! Yes, delicious too! With a coastline as wide as Cairns, underwater adventures are infinite and so is the seafood bounty. With tropical rainforests spread all over, hiking never stops; and the aboriginal tribes offer the most unique flavors one can imagine. So Cairns is deservingly one of the most enjoyable experiences on this planet!

Cairns’ Adventures: The Great Barrier Reef & Rainforests

A layover in Cairns is synonymous with outdoor adventures; underwater or into the wild, options are endless. Therefore, I always beef up my adventure gear, when Cairns is on my schedule. A flashlight, binoculars, and a waterproof camera are my constant companions, everything else I rent. Cairns being one of the most exciting places I have ever visited, my recommendations are endless. Some of my favorite experiences include:

• The Great Barrier Reef Adventures

  Like Colosseum is to Rome, GBR is to Cairns – absolutely non-negotiable! The crew and I can vehemently vouch for this. Despite having explored countless adventures at the world’s largest coral reef, we still can’t have enough of it.

  Snorkeling here goes without saying, after all, there are close to 3000 reefs spread across 900 islands, each providing an exceptional and otherworldly experience. However, if I had to pick a favorite, I would always go for the Ocean Safari Tour. It includes the two most popular reef sites – Mackay and Undine Reefs. We spotted the famous sea turtles and an intricate kaleidoscope of reef vegetation there!

  However, not all reef experiences need to be underwater! It might sound counterintuitive, but it’s true! While Skydiving and helicopter tours are top terrific adventures at the reef, cruising in the signature glass-bottomed pontoon boat has absolutely no parallels!

  I still remember that experience so vividly when we beheld the mesmerizing marine life assortment while sipping wine, devouring a delicious buffet, and enjoying live music!

• Daintree & Kuranda Rainforest Explores

While underwater explores are definitely thrilling, rainforest hikes can’t be underestimated at all! And a layover in Cairns effortlessly proves this.

Being a nature enthusiast I never miss an into-the-wild opportunity, so Cairns Rainforests share the top spot with the reef from me. And luckily my crew is also very high on exploring the unexplored, so we always escape into the woods when we get an opportunity.

These forests offer a unique ecosystem for spotting indigenous wildlife, especially the massive 4-meter-long crocodiles in Daintree and the lovable Koalas in Kuranda! Also, it is a terrific opportunity to try exotic regional food and tantalizing homemade tropical fruit ice creams!

And if you want to add on some adrenaline-pumping adventure, the lush rainforest is at your service with a majestic backdrop for ziplining and bungee jumping! So whatever floats your adventure boat, the rainforest gives it waves!

Cairns’ Uniqueness: Tjapukai Culture & Kuranda Scenic Railway Tour

A layover in Cairns is a unique opportunity to admire the region’s thrilling past and unadulterated beauty. Whether it is the aboriginal people or the centuries-old scenic train, Cairns’s charms are infinite. The crew and I always love to explore something unique on our layovers and some very striking experience include:

• Getting Acquainted with the Tjapukai Aboriginal People

  I had heard a lot about the aboriginal cultures of Oceania and was thoroughly intrigued by them. Therefore, when I got to know that Cairns has been the home of the world’s oldest civilization, the Tjapukais, from more than 40000 years ago, I had to know more about them.

  Tjapukais hold a beautiful song and dance show with delicious regional food and an admirable arts display, right in the middle of the lush green Kuranda rainforest with serene mountain backdrops! So once you are done with adventurous activities, stay back for the cultural show and the night tour.

  The drumbeats really pump you up and the smoke ceremony is the show stealer. The tribe believes that it cleanses the region and protects you from evil spirits. Even if you are not much of a mythology buff, the entire show can entice you for sure and is worth your time.

• Kuranda Scenic Railway Tour

While hiking through the rainforests is truly exceptional, riding this century-old train is a whole new way to explore the tropical paradise.

It offers glorious glimpses of the rainforest and somewhat of an aerial view, which hikers can’t easily admire unless they are willing to climb the strenuous steeper hikes.

I loved looking outside the window and admiring the exotic flowering plants, happily thriving wildlife, and the majestic waterfalls cascading through the rugged mountains.

And when the train passed through those dark tunnels or turned on those curvy bridges, it gave the rollercoaster feels, leaving me awestruck by the engineering prowess human race!

Cairns’ Vibrant Nightlife: Barhopping, Casinos, Seafood!

While a layover in Cairns is primarily filled with daytime adventures, the city ensures your nightlife is just as memorable. With cocktails overflowing, seafood freshly brought from trawler to table, and a casino right in the center of it all, you won’t have a dull night in Cairns. My best nightlife recommendations include:

• Bar-Hopping Across Cairns’ Breweries

  Let’s face it, even though the ocean offers jaw-dropping sunsets and rainforests offer thrilling adventures, the tropical climate and humidity can get you thirsty. But Cairns is always braced up to quench with its umpteen bars and breweries at your disposal!

  Whether it is a speakeasy-inspired gin joint or a rooftop brewery freshly concocting tropical cocktails and frothies, Cairns has it all, making it one of the best barhopping destinations in the world!

  With an endless array of drinking holes and tiki houses, the crew and I are always spoilt for choice, but our favorite is Hemingway’s Brewery while Three Wolves is also fantastic for specialty spirits.

  So whenever we are in Cairns, we don’t mind pulling up a stool and sampling the entire cocktail list accompanied by the flavorful woodfired pizza or a share charcuterie board.

• Devouring Fresh and Heavenly Seafood

  With such proximity to the coastline, comes deliciously fresh seafood. A layover in Cairns not only keeps you quenched, but it also ensures you are satiated too!

  Awash with unimaginably fresh seafood, Cairns offers a bevy of venues to sample the flavors, but my favorite is Prawn Star. Its casual and relaxed vibes make it the top pick for a crew like ours. We prefer variety and always choose a seafood smorgasbord to an a la carte menu.

  And Prawn Star being an amalgamation of four restored fishing trawlers offer everything the sea has in its bounty, including Shellfish, Oysters, Lobsters, and even the regional favorite Mud Crab! And when you get to end your scrumptious meal with a Davidson Plum Sorbet, you know you have ascended to the food heaven of this planet!

• Gambling the Night Away at The Reef Hotel Casino

  It’s not Vegas, but it is no less than Vegas too! Even though a boutique casino, it offers a fabulous gaming range. You get the traditional games of Blackjack and Roulette along with the trendy and exciting Sic-Bo and Reef Routine.

Along with 500 gaming machines, the casino also offers a private high-stakes gaming experience, live shows, and sports betting. Therefore, it is an exciting nightlife choice for short layovers. And if we don’t want to gamble, we while away the night watching live boxing matches on huge LED screens with a cool beer and delish food!

Cairns, You Took My Breath Away!

Even with so much to explore, every layover in Cairns has to come to an end sometime, with several unexplored adventures. Soaking at the Crystal Cascades and Josephine Falls appeals to me on a tiring flight schedule. Also, I am all pumped up to explore the underground volcanic tunnels to see the lava oozing up and close. Therefore, I am pretty sure that my next Cairns visit will be yet another adventure to remember.

A layover in Cape Town is always full of adventure and bohemian vibes. With its vast shorelines, Kaapstad, as the locals call it, is truly terrific for adventure sports. Also, the mountainous topography is fantastic for hiking and quad-biking. And when the sun goes down, the rooftop bars and waterfront cafés light up – a truly heart-melting sight worth soaking in. So, whenever I get a chance to stop in Cape Town, I know it’s going to be epic!

Outdoorsy Cape Town: Hiking, Adventure Sports, & Penguins!

Cape Town offers everything any other outdoorsy destination does, but with a twist. Even the most common experience like going to the beach feels different here and for a very valid reason. Therefore, the crew and I prefer spending most of our layover in Cape Town outdoors. Some of our favorite outdoor experiences include:

• Hiking Up the Table Mountain

  With bright sunshine, lots of greenery & a glistening coastline surrounding all around, Cape Town is best-explored hiking. And literally, the top spot for doing that is Table Mountain. Offering spectacular 360-degree views, hiking here is thoroughly rewarding.

  Also, each time the crew and I choose a new hiking trail, as there are so many, ensuring a new explore each time! But if you are not much of a hiker, don’t worry, you can even take the cable car to the top. So, whatever you do, never miss this view!

  At times, it can get a cloud cover or the “Tablecloth,” as the locals call it, but otherwise, it is one of the most beautiful “stare into eternity” experiences!

  And if you want to take the adrenaline a few notches higher, ride a scooter down the mountain slope, and experience an unimaginable thrill! However, it’s always advisable to take a guided adventure tour with proper safety equipment.

• Get Adventurous in Cape Town

No layover in Cape Town is complete without indulging in a truly thrilling adventure. Adventurists like me are utterly spoilt for choices when we’re in CT. From Water Biking in False Bay to Scuba Diving with seals in the Great African Seaforest, every adventure touches your adventurous heart, in its own unique way.

The crew and I personally love the thrill of Coasteering in False Bay. We are an adventurous bunch and feel Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, and even Para Sailing are a little too tame for us. So, we love challenging ourselves with a pirate-style adventure, including a little bit of everything – rock scrambling, kloofing, canyoning, and even snorkeling.

And when we want to stay above ground, we love mountain biking and quad-biking near the apple and pear orchards in Elgin, offering a thoroughly relishing trail with bridges, streams, and forests scattered throughout.

• Swim with the Penguins at Boulder Beach

Who doesn’t love relaxing at bright sunny beaches? But would you mind a little company, or rather a colony? Most people wouldn’t if it were a colony of Penguins!

Yes, penguins on the beach, and no, there is no snow cover; Boulder Beach is a legit pristine sandy beach with turquoise water, rock outcroppings, and the works. On top of that, you also find these beautiful black and white, wild African Penguins waddling freely around the beach, ready to be clicked with!

Surprised? So were we when we first heard about them. So much so that we had to see them with our very own eyes. We were amazed to watch them gliding in the water like torpedoes! As we were warned to keep a safe distance from them, we let them approach us, and when they did, they were so friendly that they even invited us to swim with them!

Cape Town Nightlife: Waterfront Parties & Rooftop Bars

While the days in Cape Town are pretty eventful owing to the natural attractions, the nights are very relaxing. The crew and I love to relax at some of the coziest cafes listening to live music or simply admiring the city lights from a rooftop. Some of my most favorite nightlife experiences are:

• Get Grooving at VA Waterfront

  VA Waterfront is Cape Town’s soul! Just the atmosphere here puts on your party mode. The place is always buzzing with locals and tourists alike, and offers dozens of exciting activities. My favorite one is riding the Cape Wheel!

  It gives an unparalleled glimpse of the city from a 40-meter height, with brightly lit shorelines and waterfront cafés brimming with the partying crowd and buzzing with live Rock and Jazz.

  The crew and I even love playing a Cave putt-putt game or riding the Steamboat Vicky. Also, the Playdate SuperPark’s escape rooms and aerial obstacle course are truly mind-bending!

  And if you crave some street delights, there’s an array of stalls offering a kaleidoscope of cuisines – from Mexican to Asian to Italian!

• Explore Publik’s Wine Selection or Chinchilla’s Roof Top

A layover in Cape Town is vibrant no matter where you choose to spend it. With countless bars and pubs, CT offers, it can get daunting to choose one if you are in for just one night. Two of my favorite bars I can vouch for are Publik & Chinchilla.

Publik is very chic, but that doesn’t mean it is exorbitant. However, I love it for its selection of the most unusual wines. CT, situated close to so many vineyards, offers local flavors really hard to find elsewhere. On top of that, their food menu is as expansive as it gets, especially their mouth-watering seasonal small plates!

While Publik offers nourishment, Chinchilla takes care of the views. It’s considered one of the top 20 rooftop bars on the planet, for crying out loud! Situated along the sandy beach at Camps Bay, the bar is surrounded by tall palm trees, offering the perfect scenery for soaking in the mesmerizing coastal sunsets and nightlights.

Unique Cape Town Experiences!

• Cruise through Cape Town in Style!

  CT is consdered one of the best road-tripping cities globally, owing to the peninsula’s circular nature and the awe-inspiring coastal scenery. Therefore, it’s thoroughly elating to cruise through the city in an open-top Cobra or a classic convertible. Both self-drive and guided tours are available to choose from.

  And if you are anything like me who loves sweating it out, you can even go tandem bicycling along the coastline or escootering along the promenade. Whatever mode you choose, CT drives guarantee you epic sightseeing!

• Catch a Movie Under the Stars

  While watching a movie is unimaginably ordinary, CT makes it incredibly special, thanks to The Galileo Open Air Cinema. If you want a one-of-a-kind experience anywhere in the city, just grab a “movie under the stars” ticket and experience the magic!

  Snuggled under the blanket in comfortable lawn chairs the crew and I love watching the movies while gobbling up the delicious popcorn, sweets, shwarmas, and drinks from an array of artisanal food vendors. It’s unique, it’s fun, & it’s awesome for team bonding!

• Click Selfies at the Colorful Bo-Kaap

  If there is one iconic place in CT that you should never miss, it is the colorful Bo-Kaap. With candy-colored houses and cobblestone streets, filled with the aroma of Cape Malayan spices, this is probably as local as it gets!

  But this place is also a glimpse into the city’s past. Originally, all houses were painted white and rented to slaves. However, when slavery ended, enslaved people were given the right to own property, so they painted their houses in bright hues to celebrate their freedom!

Sien Jou Later, CT: You’re Breathtaking!

A layover in Cape Town surely adds sparks to a mundane routine life. There is so much to explore each time we visit. And even after countless layovers, I haven’t had the chance to hike at Lion’s Head and Cape Point, but that’s on my list, and so is wine tasting at Cape Winelands. Being a bibliophile, I always look forward to a layover in London. So many of my favorite characters come alive every time I arrive in the city. With theme parks on every corner, every little aspect of the city transports me into a different world. And apart from theme parks, the city also offers royal attractions, rooftop bars, arcades and so much more, that every layover is epic in its own way.

Magical London: Enter A Different World Every Time

I grew up reading the Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes and the adventures of Harry Potter. So for me, exploring the related attractions is an inexplicable emotion. Looking at any of those signature red telephone booths immediately transports me to the Ministry of Magic; Visiting Baker Street makes me feel like Sherlock will emerge any moment, out of the 221B apartment. So, here are some of my favorite experiences that I would recommend to anyone having a layover in London:

• Warner Bros. Studio – The Making of Harry Potter

  I can’t explain my excitement every time I get to visit the Warner Bros Studio. It’s like entering the magical realm of Harry Potter. This is probably my favorite place not just in London but the whole world! With breathtaking sets where Hogwarts and Digon Alley come alive, I love reliving my childhood Harry Potter fandom.

  During Christmas and New Year’s, Hogwarts gets a beautiful snow cover and throughout the year you can have dinner at the Great Hall, making you feel like a Hogwarts student.

  The place is littered with authentic props for clicking lots of selfies and I love buying costumes from the gift shop and dressing up in my favorite house colors.

  The tour here also shows how the movies were filmed, taking you through all the visual effects used in the movies to make the magical world a reality! It is an epic place to be if you have a short layover in London.

• Sherlock Holmes Museum – 221B Baker Street

The words “It’s Elementary, My Dear Watson!” resound in my ears the moment I enter this museum. The place where my favorite super sleuth solved countless singular cases is yet another destination in London that brings out the crazy fanboy in me.

Recounting my visit to the museum makes me teary-eyed and truly nostalgic. With Victorian surroundings and recreated gas-lit London era of the 1800s, this place is like a pilgrimage for Sherlock fans!

Even though Sherlock is a fictional character, this fantastic recreation of the bygone era is so realistic, that you can actually imagine Sherlock looking at an interesting news article through his famous magnifying glass, smoking a pipe.

Also, the museum hosts the largest collection of Sherlock memorabilia in the world! You can even buy the famous deerstalker hat and trench coat from the gift shop, to look like your favorite detective!

• Madame Tussauds London

While the other two places bring out the imaginary characters to life, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum does the opposite – it captures reality in Wax statues!

Whenever we have a short layover in London, we try to take a tour of the wax museum. The thoroughly life-like wax statues of famous real-life celebs, including Michael Jackson, The Beatles, and The Royal Family are amazingly unbelievable! On top of that, the museum has a surprising number of tours that you can’t complete in just one visit!

The crew and I simply loved the time-capsule tour of London that seats you in an iconic mock black cab and takes you through the historic times seen by the city. We saw Shakespeare writing his famous plays to London Bridge tumbling down and everything in between and beyond! It was like reliving every historic event that took place till now, depicted through life-like yet moving wax statues!

Also, there are 4D Marvel and Star Wars tours where all our favorite Avengers and Superheroes come alive. With so much to offer, Madame Tussauds is a must-visit destination in London, offering a unique experience each time you head here!

Royal London: Meet the Number One Family in the World!

A layover in London is incomplete without visiting the multitude of royal attractions! Royalty is so engrained in every building that you can’t escape it even if you want to for some unfathomable reason. So here are my top picks in the royalty department:

• Buckingham Palace Tour, The Royal Mews, & The Change of Guards

  Buckingham Palace is pretty obvious for any first-time visitor to London, and I am no exception. On my first layover in London, I did pure touristy sightseeing, including the Palace Tour.

  Before I took the tour, I always thought that the palace is only to be looked at from the outside. However, I couldn’t be more wrong! The tour allows you to roam around the insides, and feel like a royal yourself.

  The Palace is grandeur personified. You get to admire the magnificent ballrooms adorned with gilded ceilings and glittering chandeliers and even look at the Royal Collections of treasures and artifacts from all around the world!

  If you want to add more royalty to your visit, I recommend you take the Royal Mews Tour where all the beautiful royal carriages and horses are put on display. These gold-laid carriages have taken the royal family to esteemed events such as royal weddings and coronations.

  However, if you don’t have time for an inside tour, don’t miss out on the Change of Guard ceremony that you can witness from the outside. You get to admire the royal guards in their beautiful red uniforms and tall, black, bearskin hats, led to the position by the royal band. The sight is an emotion, confirming your arrival in London!

• Westminster Abbey: The Place of Royal Ceremonies

While the palace is where the royal family resides, Westminster Abbey is what bestows royalty over the family. This Anglican Church has seen it all – The Royal Weddings, the Coronations, and the Baptism of the Royal Children!

From Diana to Meghan, every new bride became a part of the royal family here, and from Charlotte to Lilibet, all were christened here. Therefore, this iconic place is worthy of at least one visit if not more, even on a short layover in London. It captures the essence of royalty like no other place in London.

However, it’s not just about royalty, you can even visit the church for its beautiful architecture or the Hidden Highlights Tours, which take you to the parts not open to the public! Apart from that, the Christmas season is delightfully festive with Candlelight Carol Services, Christmas Concerts, and Holy Communions.

London’s Soul – The Squares, The Clock, & The View!

Now coming to the most blog-worthy attractions of the city, London is rampant with superb-looking iconic buildings, that are must-visit, must-capture, and must-to-take-selfie with! Some of my favorite attractions include:

• The Squares

  After the first layover in London, when you are done visiting the touristy spots and crave more thorough city exploration, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square are your best bets.

  You can feed the pigeons at Trafalgar Square or click selfies with the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain at Piccadilly Circus. Also, these squares are the best nightlife destinations in London, offering pubs, casual sit-downs, rooftop bars, performing art theatres, and upscale shopping districts.

  These squares offer some of the best places to relax with the crew and while away what’s left of your layover.

• The Clock

  Like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben is yet another most-Instagrammed landmark in the world! A symbol of democracy, a television and film-favorite landmark and a narrator of London’s history, the world’s most famous clock is simply unmissable on a layover in London.

  And the best part is that you don’t need to go all the way over to the clock to admire it; It’s visible from most places in the city, and you can hear its bells chiming every hour no matter how far off you are from it!

• The View

  Just when you thought what more this city with countless admirable places can offer, you will be surprised by the options you get to observe its breathtaking attractions.

  Rise 443 feet above the Thames River in London Eye’s glass capsule, glide mid-air in IFS Cloud Cable Car, or stand at the top of the 95-storied Shard! Whichever observation mode you pick, you get to capture the stunning, twinkling city lights in all their glory!

London, You’re My Favorite: I’ll Be Back In A Jiffy!

Every time a layover in London ends, I feel how much more is left to see. To date, I’ve not had the chance to visit LEGOLAND and Shrek’s Adventure! London. With limited time on hand, the city still remains thoroughly underexplored, but that’s what excites me about revisiting the city! I am definitely looking forward to my next layover.

A layover in Tel Aviv is best spent on a bike. Even if you are new in the city, you don’t need to look for places to go, just follow the bike lane and see where the road takes you. While the tree-lined Rothschild Boulevard and the funky Neve Tzedek Quarter are must-visits, some off-beat and lesser-known places have enriched my experience all the more. So it’s my pleasure to share some of my great finds over several layovers in the city.

Get Acquainted With Tel Aviv’s Charming Neighborhoods

A layover in Tel Aviv is the perfect opportunity to experience the not-so-common blend of modernity and traditionalism. While the city willingly accepts change, it doesn’t let go of its old-world charm, clearly evident through strolls across its unique neighborhoods. I love exploring a new neighborhood each time, some of my favorite experiences are:

• Enjoy Florentin’s Hipster Vibes

  If you want to experience the youthful Tel Aviv, Florentin is the place to be. Transformed into a hip neighborhood by students, this previously immigrant area is the true representation of Tel Aviv’s booming graffiti and alternative culture.

  With cool cafes, bars, and restaurants lining the street, the place is always filled with party vibes. I was lucky to visit here on a Saturday night, after Shabbat, and it was a treat in every sense. The bars and restaurants buzz till the early hours, street food vendors line up at Levinsky Market, and Mexican delights and tequila overflow.

  Sprinkle the delicious food with tranquilizing Arabic and DJ live music, and you’d never want to leave Tel Aviv because you feel at least 10 years younger when you are here.

• Go Back in Time at Yemenite Quarter

In striking contrast to the bohemian Florentin, Yemenite Quarter is Tel Aviv’s nostalgia personified. Locally known as Kerem HaTeimanim, Yemenite Quarter has preserved its age-old feel in its mazy narrow streets and unassuming eateries offering hard-to-find authentic Jewish flavors.

The no-frills eateries here offer some of the best hummus and home-cooked Israeli food in the world! The local favorites are also my favorites for obvious reasons. I love eating the Shlomo & Doron hummus and when I crave some soul-nourishing home food, I go to Anat’s Kitchen. The charming granny there welcomes everyone with a huge smile, and it feels like being fed, or rather overfed, by your own grandmom!

Therefore, even with the lack of modernity, the neighborhood sees sufficient footfall. And as the name translates into the “Vineyard of the Yemenites,” you can find some authentic Israeli-brewed liquor at the Beer Bazar.

• Soak In The Historic Jaffa

Coming to the most famous and must-visit neighborhood in Tel Aviv, Jaffa is everything you could imagine of the Middle-Eastern world. It is not just the oldest part of the city, but one of the oldest cities in the entire Mediterranean basin.

This city is the perfect place for photography enthusiasts like me. Standing atop a cliff, Jaffa offers an unparalleled range of attractions, including, mosques, churches, ancient clock towers, wishing bridges, and whatnot! Being an old Arab port town, Jaffa offers iconic stone architecture, the original bazaar area, also known as the ‘Souk’, and countless artisan boutiques. It’s the perfect place for souvenir shopping and seafood gobbling because the restaurants here offer the freshest calamari straight from the sea!

When you’re done eating, strolling, and admiring the city, head to the HaMidron Garden, offering tall minaret-like structures doubling as observation towers to stare endlessly at the vast shoreline.

Unique Tel Aviv: Attractions You Won’t Find Elsewhere

A layover in Tel Aviv is unique in many ways. While its quirky neighborhoods offer vibes you won’t find anywhere in the world, the city also offers some very unique attractions and experiences that you shouldn’t ever miss!

• Admire Israel Through A Different Lens At The PhotoHouse

  As I have told you before, I love photography and any place remotely related to it is always on my bucket list. Therefore, I love visiting The PhotoHouse when I have a layover in Tel Aviv.

  It’s one of the lesser-known or almost hidden gems of the city, offering one of the most unique collections of historical photographs. However, the place is not so hard to find because you will bump into it while strolling the incredibly famous Carmel Market.

  Admiring the beautiful black and white photos feels like witnessing Israel transform in front of your very eyes. And the best part is that you get these photos in almost all shapes and sizes to take home with you. I always pick up a few postcards and sometimes small canvasses also, if I can carry them along.

• Yet Another Unique View From The Hot Air Balloon TLV

Although my profession keeps me in the air for most of my awake time, riding this old-school piece of technology has its own serene charm.

One of the most iconic ways of sightseeing, I always recommend the Hot Air Balloon ride on a layover in Tel Aviv. The view from 120 meters in the sky is simply unparalleled, especially for photography enthusiasts looking for the perfect aerial shot without a drone!

But the best part is that the rides are available even at night, giving you some breathtaking glittery views of the city lights like you’ve never experienced before.

• A Brand New Perspective At Nalaga’at Center

Although performing arts is quite commonplace throughout the world, Tel Aviv adds its unique charm to it. During our very recent layover in Tel Aviv, the crew and I visited Nalaga’at to watch a play. We thought it would be like just another play but we were in to get our minds blown!

Unlike any other play, the show was enacted by differently-abled performers who couldn’t hear or see but still presented a flawless performance just by sensing the drumbeat vibrations! The performance was so moving that I would want to revisit it as many times as possible.

Also, to further experience their unique life, the center has an in-house restaurant where you have a delicious meal in complete darkness, served by visually-impaired waitstaff. The aim is to create awareness and employment for these uniquely talented individuals! I was totally touched!

Iconic Tel Aviv – Shoreline, Bauhaus, Musical Fountain!

A layover in Tel Aviv can never be complete without exploring some of the most iconic aspects of the city. While there are so many museums and buildings to explore, Namal and Dizengoff Circle are simply unmissable.

• Chill at Namal Port Area

  While Jaffa offers the old world charm and a distant shoreline view, Namal Port Area gives you an up and close view of the ocean, along with being the perfect port-side partying destination.

  With a slick waterfront café strip, you will never have a dull moment here. So, whenever we have a short layover in Tel Aviv and just want to relax, we always head to Namal. I love strolling and rollerblading on the boardwalk under bright sunshine with relaxed ocean waters doing their thing.

  Also, on most weekends, the port is adorned with free live music concerts that enliven the whole vibe. And to mark your visit to this gem of a city, you can even take a selfie at the iconic “I love Tel Aviv” sign.

• Experience Art & Architecture at Dizengoff Circle

  Although most of Tel Aviv is hip and modern, it does have some finer streets with art galleries and museums too. Dizengoff is the best-known place for such finer indulgence. One of the most iconic sights to behold in the circle is the Fire and Water Fountain.

  Designed using Kinetic Artistic Style, the fountain spews water in unique forms at various times of the day with lights and music making it look even more beautiful.

  Along with that, the street is one of the best places for upscale shopping, salons, and fine dining. But the most iconic part of it is the whitewashed buildings built adhering to the Bauhaus Architecture School.

Shalom, Tel Aviv: You Charmed Me!

Although the city offers much more, one layover in Tel Aviv is never sufficient to explore it all. I have heard that Lake TLV offers adrenalin-pumping adventure sports, and Sarona market is the best place to experience the new wave of food in the city. So on my next layover, I am super excited to explore these parts of the city and experience what they offer.

One layover in Lisbon is never enough. You can’t do Lisbon right in just one go; it can take a whole lifetime to experience the city truly. Even though you’d find museums and historic sites lurking at every corner, Lisbon is also a hub of delicious Portuguese cuisine and never-ending nightlife. Also, if you’re a day-trip lover like me, the city is in close proximity to innumerable tourist spots, making it a deserving day-trip hotbed

Age of Discovery Relics, Tile Art, Selfie Murals & Tram Rides

I am not much of a history person, so I was surprised when I couldn’t hold myself from visiting so many of Lisbon’s historic sites. The moment I stepped foot in the city, on my first layover in Lisbon, I was blown away. Its iconic structures lured me and fired my curiosity about building in town. Lisbon should be renamed ‘Selfie Town,’ in my opinion, because the sites are absolutely jaw-dropping. My favorites include:

• Portugal’s Maritime Adventures: Torre de Belém, Jerónimos Monastery, Padrão dos Descobrimentos

  Starting with the signature going-to-Lisbon site, Torre de Belém is simply awe-inspiring, situated on an island amidst the Tagus River. Its pitch white limestone exterior, the vast bastion to fit 17 cannons, and the unparalleled architectural amalgamation are worth a million visits. You can even climb up the spiral staircase to catch the most beautiful bird’s-eye view of sailing yachts.

  Just next to the tower, catch a glimpse of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos or the Discovery Monument, recounting Portugal’s glory days as a mighty maritime nation. The monument, shaped like a sailing ship, depicts Dom Henrique and his crew, set to make their next discovery.

  Another Age of Discovery relic, just a walking distance, is the Jerónimos Monastery. An impressive symbol of Portugal’s wealth, from here only Vasco da Gama left on his voyage to India and also where his tomb lies. The entire architecture alludes to voyages with carvings of sea monsters and corals. The place immediately makes you want to go sailing.

• Lisbon’s Old Secrets: Tram Rides, Blue Tiles, Gigantic Murals, and Much More

Even commuting in Lisbon is exciting; trams connect almost all of Lisbon and funiculars provide beautiful views from the top. Tram 28 and Funicular Lavra take you through the oldest parts with the richest stories, such as the Alfama District, full of narrow lanes, cobbled streets, colored houses, and yellow flowers.

Walking through this district, smelling sardines, and listening to Fado is a truly surreal experience. Also, as you walk by, you will find so many giant murals and graffiti to click selfies with that your social media will be bombarded with appreciation for a whole year.

While the whole city is an open-air museum, you must check out the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, dedicated to tile art dating back to the 15^th century and a continuing part of Portugal’s culture. These tiles recount Portugal’s history through painted story-telling artwork, a unique art form that will leave you flabbergasted

Delightful Flavors, Scrumptious Desserts, & Vibrant Nightlife

The rule to sampling Lisbon’s delicious delights is “Never sit down and eat!” Grab a to-go delicacy as you walk around Lisbon, explore every nook and corner, and taste every single delicious treat from obscure hidden gem cafes, guaranteeing you flavors you can’t even imagine!

But wait, that is not the climax; combine food with nightlife, and the whole city will transform into a fiesta for you! Let me tell you how to do that right:

• Coffee, Breakfast, and Santini Ice Cream

  Start your day by paying a visit to the oldest restaurant in Lisbon, Café Restaurant Martinho da Arcada, where poet Fernando Pessoa did some of his best work at his favorite table, sipping his favorite coffee. The place also prides itself in his bronze statue right outside – a terrific selfie spot.

  Taste the traditional Portuguese recipes passed down over generations. I love it for breakfast, especially their Smoked Asparagus with Ham and Shrimp Omelette. And to go with my meal, I have their delicious, authentic cappuccino; I can vouch for it; it’s the best coffee in the world!

  Wondering what can top a meal like that? I know just the thing! A cone of artisan-style ice cream from Gelados Santini! Creamy beyond imagination, made from fresh fruits, without artificial color, and yet beyond delicious! The caramelized red-fruit Gelato is always my post-breakfast to-go dessert as I walk around Lisbon, checking out its infinite attractions.

• Burger and Creamy Tarts for Lunch

On your visit to Torre de Belém, your lunch should be at no place other than Ground Burger. My favorite here is obviously the signature Ground Burger with 100% Black Angus meat, queijo cheddar, and fries. My mouth is salivating even as I am thinking about it. This is the best burger in the whole of Lisbon.

They even have doughnuts, but why settle for doughnuts when Pastéis de Belém is just around the corner if you are a sweet tooth like me?

The famous, one-of-a-kind cream tart made from Mosteiro dos Jerónimo’s secret recipe dating back to 1837 can’t be explained in words! Just go, grab the tart, put it in your mouth, and feel it melt. The feeling is absolutely divine.

Need I say more than both these places should be on your itinerary?

• Dance, Live Music, & Roof-Top River-View

  While the days are full of scrumptious delights, the nights in Lisbon are vibrant to the T, literally. So, while we are there, we love to let our guards down and just flow with the city vibes.

  Lux, Lisbon’s best club, has two dance floors and a roof terrace overlooking the river to top that! The view, the world-renowned DJs, doing what they do the best, and all-night partying – you just can’t help but groove. So when we have a longer layover in Lisbon, we ensure we spend the first night here.

  On shorter layovers, the crew and I love listening to some live Fado at Mesa de Frades. The place was originally a chapel, so it still has the same tiles and murals on the walls. And live Fado is an ultimate Lisbon experience, so that’s unparalleled. But the best part is that it is not overcrowded; it’s soothing and intimate.

An Enchanting Fairy Tale Town and Beach hopping near Lisbon

While a layover in Lisbon itself is full of enticing attractions, there is even much to explore everywhere around. So, after a few explores of the city, the crew and I even love taking a few trips to nearby places.

• Get enchanted by Sintra

  “Did you go to Sintra?” is a common question if you tell anyone you have been to Lisbon. The reason is that it is just 30-minutes away and is a magical land altogether. With whimsical palaces, regal gardens, and Moorish hill-top castles, Sintra is just like entering into a fairy tale. The place offers innumerable selfie points and is a social media lover’s paradise.

• Go beach hopping

  Portugal is blessed with ample coastline on the west, so beach-hopping options around Lisbon are abundant. Each beach destination has something special to offer. If you love authentic seafood, head to Península de Troia, with 60km of pristine beaches and a casino too. So, you can bask during the day and gamble at night.

  For surfing lovers, Caxias Beach is the place to be. First of all, it is just 15 minutes away from Lisbon center, but you can’t just surf all the time, all the right conditions need to be met for waves to break and that’s just 5 days a year, so if you get the rare chance to surf here, grab it with both hands because it is totally awesome!

  Finally, if you literally want to go beach hopping, then head to Costa da Caparica. There are beach areas here for you to choose from, and they have the Transparia train to take you from Nova Praia beach to Fonte da Telha beach. Just the thought of the vast sandy shorelines, the quaint fishermen’s houses, and the beautiful sunset melts my heart.

Até mais Lisbon: I’ll be back soon!

A layover in Lisbon guarantees a novel experience every time with the city’s never-ending list of incredible places at your disposal. I am charmed by it no matter how many times I revisit because I know I will stumble upon something lovely in each encounter. And every time I leave, I carry bags full of souvenirs for my entire family from the Feira da Ladra, something to remember this gem of a city.

A layover in Toronto is my favorite way to explore the city’s attractions and also get away from it on a nature escapade. I love escaping to the awe-inspiring Niagara Falls each time. However, don’t get me wrong, if you are not a nature buff. There are so many adventures waiting near the falls, including amusement parks, casinos, wine-tasting, colonial towns, and go-karting, that even non-nature-buffs should pack their gear and head to the falls.

First Things First: My Favorite Spots within Toronto

While escaping to the falls is my favorite thing to do on a layover in Toronto, at times, I don’t have enough time on hand. That’s when I stay within the city, doing what I love the most. So some top spots for me are:

• Casa Loma

  Nestled atop a hill in Toronto, Casa Loma is an extraordinary building that looks like something straight out of a medieval fairytale. Originally constructed in 1914 for Sir Henry Pellatt, a Canadian multi-millionaire, the house is now a museum that offers a glimpse into a period of European elegance and splendor with decorated suites, mysterious secret passages, and an 800-foot tunnel. Overall, it is a fantastic place to capture selfies or feel like being in a period drama!

• Distillery District

A unique and historic area lovingly transformed into a trendy spot for shopping and entertainment, the Distillery District is now a wonderful place to spend a day exploring charming boutiques, galleries, artists’ studios, and restaurants. And I was lucky to be here around Christmas for the famous annual Toronto Christmas Market, with festive wooden stalls selling unique gifts, a beautiful Christmas tree, and cozy outdoor areas with fire pits to keep you warm.

• View from the CN Tower

  In my opinion, no trip to a city is complete without observing it from an iconic sky-high observation tower, and the 553-meter CN Tower offers just that in Toronto! I love looking at the beautiful night lights from its observation decks or enjoying a delicious meal with fabulous views of the city and Lake Ontario.

With some incredible times spent within Toronto, let me now take you to the Falls, where I escape to on almost every layover in Toronto.

Falling for the Falls in All Their Hues

Just a short drive from Toronto, Niagara Falls are a jaw-dropping natural wonder! Their sight always makes me stare in open-mouthed wonder at their sheer vastness. Each time I have been here on a layover in Toronto, it has been a terrific experience. Although the Falls can be reached from both US and Canada, I have always loved the Canadian side more.

• What does the Canadian Side offer?

  Although Niagara is a group of falls, the largest one, The Horseshoe Falls, is on the Canadian side, offering a much better view when visited from Canada. Along with that, the other two falls are also clearly visible from this side, unlike the US side, thereby offering a much more wholesome and panoramic experience. 

The crew and I have explored the Falls in all their hues, and each has given us a fantastic time to cherish. Some of my favorite experiences are:

• Journey Behind the Falls:

Our first visit to the Falls gave us a truly unique perspective on Niagara Falls. We wanted to get up and close to the falls, so we went for the very famous Journey Behind the Falls experience, and now we know why every tourist raves about it.

This beautiful experience takes you 150 feet underground through an elevator and, from there, through a series of tunnels right up to the base of the Horseshoe Falls for unimaginably stunning views of the falls from behind! 

It feels like you are behind a colossal water curtain, a truly unforgettable experience for nature lovers like me.

• The White Water Walk to the Falls:

  While nothing compares to the “Behind the falls experience,” I even love the White Water Walk along the Niagara River. It takes you as close as possible to the whirlpool rapids. This wooden walkway offers a long peaceful walk with only nature sounds all around, making you totally forget the city woes.

  However, instead of walking the whole distance every time, I love spending hours on the viewing deck along the way. I love admiring the beauty all around and giving my mind the most sought-after peace after a long flying schedule.

• The Night Time Illumination of the Falls:

  While the days are peaceful, the falls look entirely different at night. There is a spectacular light show that illuminates the falls for a truly stunning effect.

  Let me tell you; it’s not just another light show. This extraordinary display is seen from the Niagara Falls illumination cruise or the Niagara Falls boat tour, giving you the front row seats to see the illumination from up close. It is truly a hair-raising experience!

Adventures & Amusement: Ziplining, Giant Wheel, GoKarting

While the falls are a natural enchantress, there are a lot of adrenaline-pumping adventures nearby to explore:

• Zipline to the Falls:

  Zipline to the Falls is one of the most exhilarating ways to experience Niagara Falls. This thrilling ride takes you on a breathtaking journey into the gorge, providing stunning views of the falls.

  You glide down 670 meters, soar past the American Falls, and land atop the falls observation deck at Horseshoe Falls base. Best of all, the snow and ice encasing Niagara Falls is spellbinding during the winter months.

• Niagara Skywheel & Clifton Hill:

  While Ziplining is totally thrilling, there are many more adventures to explore at the falls. One of my favorites is the Niagara SkyWheel. It’s the perfect way to take in the stunning natural beauty of the falls.

  This 175 feet high giant wheel offers unparalleled views. On top of that, the gondolas are climate controlled, so you can enjoy in all weathers, without turbulence!

  Also, Clifton Hill offers a wealth of activities, including boat tours, hiking trails, theme parks, arcades, and mini golf! And that’s why the crew and I love spending our layover in Toronto here; it’s a new experience every time.

• Niagara Speedway:

While also in Clifton Hill, the Speedway occupies a special spot in my heart. It takes the thrill to a whole new level, combining kart racing challenge with roller coaster ride excitement.

The course is spread over four acres and features over 2000 linear feet of the concrete racing surface. It feels like flying through a four-story helical spiral and then onto a two-tiered coaster-style ramp that runs into another spiral at almost 32 km/hr.

I love the whole experience because it tests our driving skills, makes us negotiate the hairpin turns, and pushes us to climb the elevated ramp for the checkered flag!

Hidden Gems: Casino, Wine Tasting, & the Colonial Selfie Town

• Niagara Fallsview Casino:

If you love high stakes, Fallsview Casino Resort is the crown jewel of Niagara Falls. Built on a cliff overlooking the Horseshoe Falls, the resort offers stunning views, luxurious accommodations, and first-class gaming and entertainment. With over 3,000 slot machines and 130 gaming tables, it is the largest casino in Canada.

• Niagara on the Lake:

Nestled just beyond Niagara Falls, this picturesque colonial town epitomizes old-world charm, with quaint shops, picturesque streets, and beautifully preserved heritage buildings forming the perfect backdrop for selfies. The town is also home to a thriving wine industry, with dozens of wineries producing some of the country’s finest vintages.

Whenever we have time, the crew and I love strolling through the town’s charming streets. Sampling the local wines adds a lot of charm to the whole layover in Toronto.

A layover in Toronto is bliss, with so much to explore within and Niagara just in the neighborhood. I’ve heard so much about Toronto’s Italian and Greek ethnic enclaves that my bucket list is overflowing. Let’s see what all I get to experience next time.

A layover in Seychelles for me is an adventure. Every time there is something new to explore. Till now, I have only explored the three biggest islands, Mahe, Praslin, & La Digue, while 112 still remain! I look forward to unearthing beautiful hidden gems in the unexplored islands. For now, I am sharing my favorite experiences of this mesmerizing archipelago.

Magical Views, Tea Estates, Bike Rides

While islands always offer sunshine beaches, Seychelles offers the full spectrum of natural adventures. The challenging hikes, the time-traveling bike rides, and aromatic tea and coconut plantations make the layover in Seychelles unimaginably diverse. Some of my favorite adventures to explore are:

• Copolia Trail Hike:

  On my first layover, the crew and I stayed in the Mahe Island, the largest one of all. As the international airport is on Mahe, it is one of the most convenient islands to explore. We wanted to have that one glimpse of the whole island that would say it all. The locals pointed us to Copolia Trail Hike. I still can’t thank them enough because it has been one of the most memorable hikes of my life.

  This intermediate trail is just over a kilometer long and takes approx. an hour to complete, but the glorious views from the granite hilltop at 500m elevation are mesmerizing. You can see everything in just one 360-degree panoramic view – the glistening white sand beaches amidst the crystal blue Indian Ocean.

  If you are a nature-lover like me, you can even head to the Saint Anne Marine Park nearby and explore some of the native species.

• Colonial coconut plantation bike-ride in La Digue:

  While Mahe is beautifully explored on foot, La Digue adds its cycling flavor to the layover. The island allows minimal motor vehicle use, so cycling is your best bet and also the most enchanting one.

  La Digue has a cycling track ready for you, no matter your preferred difficulty level. You can choose the most challenging climbs near Anse Cocos and Grand Anse, or a flatter track near Anse Source d’Argent – The pink sand beach!

  Being a more relaxed biker, I went with the flatter track, and to my utter surprise, I came across L’Union Estate. The estate was a Coconut and Vanilla plantation during the colonial era.

  It’s an incredible time-traveling experience offering uncountable photo opportunities, including the beautiful French Plantation House, The Giant Union Rock, and the Traditional Copra Mill.

• Morne Blanc Trail & The Tea Plantation Tour:

  Yet another sought-after trails on Mahe Island, Morne Blanc offers rich biodiversity encompassing several endemic species. This 3 km trail is filled with lush forests and tea plantations.

  The tea estates fall at the very start of the trail, but I would recommend that you visit them on your way back. One reason for that is you wouldn’t want to miss out on the magnificent early morning top-of-the-trail views.

  Second, the forested mountainous terrain to the top offers a bit of a challenge and a warm beverage after it is rejuvenating beyond explanation.

  My favorite plantation is SeyTe. Climbing those lush green tea terraces and picking some leaves yourself is a rekindling experience. Afterward, I recommend touring the factory to witness the tea leaves getting processed to end up in your warm sweet cuppa finally!

Bonfire Parties, Pink Sand & Aldabra-Cadabra!

While beaches are almost everywhere, Seychelles offers some extremely unique activities and vistas to make your beach visit an all-new experience. My favorite experiences include:

• Bon Fire Party at Beau Vallon Beach:

  While on Mahe, you can pick no other beach except the Beau Vallon. The crystal-clear waters and beautiful landscape are just a few attractions.

  If I have a one-day layover in Seychelles, I prefer staying in Mahe. But I make it a point to explore something new on this beach. On a few occasions, I have experienced magical underwater wonders, including the coral reefs, the eagle rays, and even the sharks.

  While on other visits, I have simply lied down and basked in the bright sun. The sunsets are unmatchable, and the diverse natural views of the beautiful shoreline are never-ending.

  Being a foodie, I have explored almost all types of outlets, from food stalls to fine restaurants. Sometimes the crew and I have even caught our own seafood, cooked it, and feasted on it.

  Also, the nights at the beach are super engaging. They have bonfires, drum beats, and local “Moutya” dance performances. These bonfire parties are so enticing that you just don’t want to go anywhere else.

• Pink Sand of Anse Source d’Agent:

  While you are biking around La Digue, never miss a chance to visit the most famous beach in Seychelles. The pink sand itself is enough to drive you mad if you are looking for those instagrammable clicks. The rustling palms and gigantic rock formations are nowhere behind in making it to your social media.

  Just adjacent to the L’Union Estate, this beach is everything you can ask for in terms of peace, sunshine, beach fun, and so much more!

  The crew and I love kayaking here because the water is so peaceful. Sometimes we simply jump into the waters for a warm and relaxing swim because the waters are shallow and perfect. The shallow waters offer the perfect snorkeling destination to witness colorful fish, including Sulphur Damsel, Butterfly Fish, and Moorish Idol.

• Giant Aldabra Tortoises in Curieuse Island:

  While Praslin offers award-winning Anse Lazio and Anse Volbert beaches, it is also the gateway to Curieuse Island – the paradise for Giant Aldabra Tortoises.

  Just a short boat ride from Praslin is the land of amazement, home to around 500 Aldabra tortoises. They have bathtub size shells, just to give you a mental image.

  I was flabbergasted not just by their sheer size but also by seeing these giant reptiles roaming freely all across Curieuse Island! They weigh close to 500 pounds, and yet they are very friendly and feed on plants. Some of these are even 100 years old!

  Seychelles is the only place on the planet to present such natural habitat for these magical creatures.

Creole Food Stalls, Home Rum, Street Shopping

One of my favorite parts of a Layover in Seychelles is tasting the delicious Creole food here. Although you can find almost every cuisine, Creole is the most unique one. Also, The street markets full of unique souvenirs make the trip memorable. Some of my favorite food and shopping destinations are:

• Creole Food, Seafood & TakaMaka Rum:

  Seychelles exposes you to a magnificent buffet of cuisines – Indian, African, Creole & almost everything imaginable. Although spoilt for choice, I still have a few favorites.

  I love eating at the street food stalls sprinkled all across the islands. Jules Take Away in Mahe is one of my go-to places to have some mouth-watering seafood and BBQ Pork.

  But when in La Digue, one meal at Marie Antoinette goes unsaid. The famous Bat Curry is the crown jewel on the table, and the restaurant offers a fantastic vegetarian selection too.

  Finally, I love the contemporary twist to the traditional Creole flavors at La Plaine St. Andre, along with some delicious home-distilled TakaMaka rum.

• Victoria Market:

  This street market is a glimpse into the colorful local culture, making it a must-visit destination. Also known by its official, Sir Selwyn- Selwyn Clarke Market, it is full of vibrant shops and food stalls.

  You can check out some of the freshest seafood produce here, but I love it for its souvenir variety. The colorful sarongs and beach shirts are fantastic memorabilia, but the best souvenir to take home are the local spices, herbs, and vanilla pods.

You can also get beautiful coconut shell artifacts or offbeat and unique seashell jewelry. But if you want to buy some expensive stuff, check out the lovely black pearl jewelry in Seychelles markets.

Orevwar Seychelles: Plezir Meeting You

A layover in Seychelles is pleasure personified. I am totally smitten by its beauty and culture. It always brings out the adventurous side of me. On my next visit, I plan to go rock climbing.

Also, someone told me about this fantastic BBQ boat tour to Therese Island. So, next time I am there, I will make it a point to explore some of the smaller islands and see what they have in store.

A layover in Prague is an exciting adventure for me. I love its history-oozing architecture, rebellious street art, delicious bohemian cuisine, and tasty craft beers. I can never grow out of Prague’s fascinating charm, no matter how many times I visit the city. For me, every inch of the city is alluring. So, I am elated to share my favorite Prague experiences.

Mesmerizing Prague: Castles, River Cruises, Vibrant Neighborhoods

If it is your first layover in Prague, I guarantee you will be left speechless. I remember how tongue-tied I got because the city is, hands down, mesmerizing. Also, it is not just the ancient buildings and the renaissance architecture that will take your breath away; it is how you go about sightseeing. To sum up, Prague is simply enchanting.

• Prague Castle:

  This ancient castle is the first place you should visit if you are in Prague. This is where your landing in Prague feeling sinks in. This massive 570-meter long fortification has a Guinness world record for being the world’s largest ancient castle.

  If you have a short layover in Prague, you can spend it all here itself. The castle hosts so many of Prague’s top attractions that you wouldn’t want to go anywhere else.

  While you are getting awe-inspired by the castle, check out the Golden Lane. It is a charming street that hosted Goldsmith shops in its time and has a mysterious Alchemist legend surrounding it.

  I loved The Old Royal Palace, where I saw the Change of Guards ceremony in the day and the light and sound show at night.

• Charles Bridge Stroll & River Cruise:

  Whenever I am in Prague, the explorer in me comes to the fore. I can’t resist the temptation of strolling through its narrow streets and soaking in its smell.

  One of my favorite places to take a long stroll is the Charles bridge. I love admiring the sandstone architecture and statues here. I can simply get lost in my thoughts.

  During November & December, just before Christmas, the city has a lantern lighting ceremony. It is a beautiful sight. There are 46 gas lanterns along the bridge, and each is gas-lit—a really fantastic sight.

  Post the lantern ceremony, the crew and I like to take the Vltava River cruise. The illuminated sites glow majestically in pitch dark silhouette. Some of my favorite sites from the cruise are Petřín Tower, Dancing House, and Prague Castle.

• Old Town Square:

  Finally, if you want to capture a memory of visiting Prague, don’t forget to visit the Old Town Square – ‘Staromestske Namesti.’

  This insanely beautiful square (some say in the entire world) offers innumerable historical sites to see and things to do. This is where every celebration in the town takes place, so you can imagine the vibrant energy this square is filled with.

  My favorite site for the iconic ‘going-to-Prague’ selfie is the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square.

  During December, the square hosts the famous Prague Christmas Markets and fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Taste the mouth-watering traditional Czech ham or sweet dough from a street stall or enjoy a street performance. The square guarantees entertainment all year round.

Quirky Prague: Street Art, Unique Museums, Comedy Shows

The best thing about a layover in Prague is that it makes you feel alive. There are so many exciting places to visit and activities to undertake that you will never have a dull moment in the city.

• Graffiti & Street Art:

Prague promises that your art hopping won’t be boring. The most enticing Graffiti wall in Prague is the John Lennon Wall. It is the perfect selfie spot, a symbol of rebellion and downright beautiful. The wall has been painted over and repainted by 30 artists who have kept the flame of free spirit alive.

Apart from the Lennon Wall, the Marching Yellow Penguins installation along the Vltava shoreline at Kampa Park is another one of my favorites. I find it adorable and enlightening at the same time, considering it represents voices against climate change.

Several other Franz Kafka street sculptures by the artist David Cerny sprawled throughout the city also offer fantastic selfie opportunities.

• Quirky Museums:

  Again, Prague ensures that nothing about it is boring. It has over 280 museums, each one immeasurably interesting.

  The top quirky museum is the Apple Museum. It houses all the Apple computers from 1976 to 2012. Being a techno junkie, I love visiting this place every time I am in Prague. To make the experience all the more authentic, the museum offers Vegan food aligned with Steve Jobs’ food preferences.

  I am always a child at heart, and toys will always be my favorite, no matter how old I get. So the Toy Museum here is my go-to museum. I love the old Czech toys like the Märklin model trains, model planes, and even the Barbie Dolls.

• Jára Cimrman Theater:

  If you love theatre and traditional Czech dry humor, you must catch a Cimrman Play. Jára Cimrman, a fictional character, is said to be the greatest Czech of all time.

  These plays offer laughable alternate narratives of famous historical events, where Jára Cimrman achieves all significant breakthroughs. Still, due to some unfortunate incident, he is unable to get credit for his genius.

  The shows are uniquely hilarious. These always make our crew have a hearty laugh before our layover in Prague comes to an end.

Delicious Prague: Craft Beer, Bohemian Flavors, Vegan Delights

Finally, if you are in Prague, could you not taste its authentic flavors and homebrews? I am sure that can never be true. Some of my favorite things to do in the culinary aspect of Prague are:

• Brewery Tour:

  If you are a beer lover like me, Prague is your heaven. Like everything else in Prague, Prague’s brewing culture is historical too. There are some breweries so old that they have been brewing since the year 993!

  You can create your own tour or take a guided one, but you are ensured to taste some of the finest Bohemian beers while you are in Prague.

  My favorite microbrewery here is U Fleků with its 8 beer halls, beer garden, beer museum, and of course, innumerable tap beers.

• Traditional Bohemian Food:

  In Prague you can combine your beer tastings with some most authentic Bohemian flavors.

  If I have to pick just one dish, it will be the beef steak tartare. I can’t forget the burst of juices when I had my first bite of it. Nase Maso is the restaurant I can’t thank enough because the steak was heavenly.

  I keep going back there or each layover in Prague. I even love their Pilsner with my steak as it increases the flavors multifold.

• Vegan Delights:

  Over my several visits to Prague, I have grown to love their vegan cuisine very much. I love meat, but if well-made, vegan food has its own unmatched flavors.

  When in Prague, the crew always makes it a point to have at least one delicious vegan meal at Loving Hut.

  I have tasted their whole menu in all my layovers combined, and it is perfect for every meal. I love the Thai Curry and Risotto if I want something to last the entire day.

  For a quick bite, I go for their Bun Bo Hue comprising rice noodles in vegetable broth with soy slices.

  Also, their Homemade Lemonade and Fruit Cider are out of this world!

Na Shledanou Prague – You are treasured in my heart

I can never be bored in Prague. I’ve heard that the traditional marionette theatres in the city host awe-inspiring puppet shows. I am definitely catching one on my next layover in Prague.

Even the MindMaze escape room is another fun activity that our riddle-loving crew wants to explore. On our next visit to Prague, we will be solving some mind-bending clues. I am already dreaming about it; I hope we stop by Prague very soon!
